Robert Shaw Conducts the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus

Barely a month before Robert Shaw was to lead the ASO on their first European Tour in May 1986, they had to cancel their four-concert tour due to security issues resulting from the U.S. bombing of Libya in April 1986. It would have marked the first time an American orchestra had traveled to Europe with its own chorus. They were to perform the Fauré Requiem, the Berlioz Requiem, Poulenc's Gloria and Duruflé's Requiem in the original venues that these works were first premiered. As a consolation prize for musicians and audience alike, the Orchestra's performance of the Berlioz Requiem, as well as Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, was filmed and recorded in Symphony Hall for broadcast.
