At 24, the future film composer Erich Korngold was already at the height of his powers when he offered up this nostalgic post-war love letter to old Vienna. Rich, haunting and melodious, the poignant art songs Abschiedslieder hint at the creative spark which would one day become the Hollywood sound. Korngold was heir to the musical universe of Wagner and Bruckner, as evidenced in Wagner's entrancing "Good Friday Spell" or in the striking harmonies of Bruckner's Symphony No. 4. This week, two charismatic artists return to Atlanta: Maestro Donald Runnicles and the captivating mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor.
