Sarah Shafer has "crystalline sound, perfectly true intonation, glowing warmth, and total presence" [Philadelphia Inquirer].

The electrifying Italian maestro Nicola Luisotti returns to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to conduct two treasures for soprano and orchestra: Mozart's exquisite motet "Exsultate, Jubilate," and Mahler's Symphony No. 4. Using "The Heavenly Life" from a vast collection of German folk poems, Mahler crafts a child's view of heaven for a tender finale to his bucolic Fourth Symphony. The fast-rising young soprano Sarah Shafer makes her Atlanta Symphony Orchestra debut. The concert opens with the American heavy: Barber's Adagio for Strings, famously featured at the funeral of J.F.K. It also played prominently in the films Platoon and The Elephant Man.

Thursday evening includes a pre-concert chamber music recital at 6:45 p.m. in Atlanta Symphony Hall. Free for all ticket holders of the May 14 and 16, 2020 concerts.
