Beethoven and Bernstein — Part Two

Atlanta Symphony Hall

Performance Dates

Thursday, May 30, 2019 8:00 PM
Saturday, June 1, 2019 8:00 PM
Sunday, June 2, 2019 3:00 PM

Both Beethoven and Bernstein broke with convention to explore new paths of expression. So evocative is Beethoven's "Pastoral" Symphony, American entrepreneur and animator Walt Disney used the piece for his 1940 film Fantasia. Bernstein crafted Halil as a musical response to the tragic death of an Israeli flutist and soldier. These performances feature Principal Flute Christina Smith. Also on the program, an appetizer to the Atlanta Symphony's upcoming presentation of Beethoven's Fidelio – a magnificent overture written for the opera, and later set aside: Leonore Overture No. 3.

Thursday evening includes a pre-concert lecture at 7 p.m. in Atlanta Symphony Hall by ASO Insider and Program Notes Annotator Ken Meltzer. Free for all ticket holders of the May 30, June 1 & 2, 2019, concerts.
