Biography

Italian bass Andrea Mastroni began his musical education as a clarinettist before moving to vocal studies where he trained with Lella Cuberli, Rita Antoniazzi and Fernando Cordeiro Opa and graduated from the Istituto Claudio Monteverdi in Cremona. His awards include the Mario Basiola prize (2005), the Giuseppe Di Stefano prize (Trapani) for his portrayl of Sparafucile Rigoletto, the Bibiena (Mantua) prize (2007) and the XXXVII Prize Franco Abbiati for his performance in Perocco's Aquagranda at Teatro La Fenice, dedacated to the tragic Venitian floods of 1966.

His operatic performances include Rigoletto and Aida (Arena di Verona, Opernhaus Zurich, Teatro Massimo di Palermo and Metropolitan Opera), Verdi Requiem (Carlo Felice di Genova), Rigoletto (Teatro alla Scala tour in Japan, Teatro Real de Madrid and Opéra de Montecarlo), La Traviata (Teatro alla Scala), La Fanciulla del West (Opéra de Paris), La Bohème (Teatro La Fenice in Venice), L'Orfeo (Bayerische Staatsoper), Macbeth (Theatre des Champs Elysées), Turandot (Cincinnati Opera), Fidelio (Opera de Oviedo), Die Zauberflöte (Teatro Massimo di Palermo and Hamburgische Staatsoper), La Bohéme (Teatro Campoamor Oviedo), Turandot (Festival de Peralada), the world premiere of Aquagranda by F.Perocco (Teatro La Fenice in Venice), and Don Carlo (Royal Opera House Covent Garden).

Andrea's repertoire includes Rocco Fidelio, Seneca L'Incoronazione di Poppea, Colline La Bohème, Sparafucile Rigoletto, Hundung Die Walküre, Selim Il Turco in Italia, Cardinal de Brogni La Juive, Il Re di Scozia Ariodante, Heinrich Lohengrin, Daland Der fliegende Holländer, Sarastro Die Zauberflöte, Gremin Eugene Onegin, Achille in Sciro, Mustàfa Italiana in Algeri, König Marke Tristan und Isolde, and the title roles in Don Giovanni and Don Pasquale among many others.

In concert he has performed the Bach Johannespassion at the Ravenna Festival and at the MiTo Festival (Milan and Turin), Mozart's Requiem in Padua with I Solisti Veneti, recital at the Festival International – Art Lyrique in Aix-en-Provence and Mozart's Requiem at the Festival Anima Mundi in Pisa with Christopher Hogwood.

Andrea's discography includes Gounod Roméo et Juliette with Fabio Luisi and Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice (Decca), Semiramide with Antonino Fogliani and Virtuosi Brunensis (Naxos), Lamento; songs for voice and piano by Henri Duparc with Mattia Ometti (Brilliant Classics), I Vespri siciliani (C Major) and Marchetti Romeo E Giulietta (Dynamic). He has recorded a new Handel Serse for Deutsche Grammophon, with Il Pomo d'Oro.

Engagements this season and beyond include Pallante Agrippina at the Bayerische Staatsoper and Royal Opera House conducted by Antonio Pappano, Achille in Sciro, and Die Zauberflöte at Teatro Real Madrid. He will also tour Agrippina with Il Pomo d'Oro around Europe. He has just recorded and released Handel arias for bass with the Accademia dell' Annunciata. Concerts include Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and Tristan und Isolde in concert with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and Songs and Dances of Death with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
