Born in Bucharest, Romania, into a music-loving family, John Detrino graduated at the top of his class of string players from the Conservatory of the State University in Bucharest. After winning competitive auditions, he played in Bucharest and toured Europe extensively with the Romanian Radio Symphony and the Philharmonic Orchestra "George Enescu".
He defected during a tour of West Germany and came to the USA, where he played in the Cleveland Orchestra?s Blossom Festival and studied with Abraham Skernick. He was a member of the North Carolina Symphony for two years before joining the ASO in 1972.
Mr. Detrino has played recitals in Europe and America. He teaches private students and lives with his wife of 41 years, Mariana N. Detrino, a cellist and retired music educator. Their daughter is a graduate of Georgia Tech in Industrial Design. He enjoys repairing string instruments in his spare time and has made two high-quality violas.
