Principal Horn
The Sandra and John Glover Chair
Principal Hornist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Brice Andrus joined the ASO in 1966, while still a student at Georgia State University, and moved up to the principal’s chair in 1975. He holds the ASO’s endowed Sandra and John Glover Chair. In 1967 he traveled to the Middle East for a two-month tour with the Georgia State University Brass Ensemble, performing in Afghanistan, Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, and Syria.
In addition to frequent solo appearances with the ASO (works by Mozart, Dukas, Knussen, Richard Strauss, and his father, Franz Strauss), Mr. Andrus maintains an active chamber-music schedule. In 2004 he performed in chamber-music festivals at Amelia Island, Florida; Madison, Georgia; and Highlands-Cashiers, North Carolina, and was soloist in the Richard Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1 with the Victoria Symphony in Texas.
Mr. Andrus has toured on several occasions with the Summit Brass and was a featured performer at the International Horn Society Workshops in 1993 and 1999. A member of the Emory Chamber Music Society, with which he has recorded the Horn Trio by Johannes Brahms on the ACA Digital label, he also performs on several ACA Digital recordings featuring the music of Atlanta composer Charles Knox.
Mr. Andrus studied horn with Forrest Standley and Dale Clevenger. He currently teaches at Emory University. He is married to Susan Welty, the ASO’s Assistant Principal Hornist.
