Principal Tubist
Georgia-Pacific Chair
Born in Blackwell, Oklahoma, but raised in Decatur, Georgia, Michael Moore joined the Atlanta Symphony in 1968, becoming at age 18 the youngest tubist in any major orchestra. Holder of the ASO's endowed Georgia-Pacific Chair, he has performed the Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto with the orchestra in Symphony Hall and at Piedmont Park and says he has played "hundreds" of performances of Tubby the Tuba. He also performed the Edward Gregson Tuba Concerto with ensembles in Atlanta and Columbus. In October 2003 he was guest tubist with the Chicago Symphony. Last April, he performed the Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto with the ASO and Robert Spano. He was guest artist at Tubilustrium 2005 in Cosenza, Italy, last summer and at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, in November.
Mr. Moore is the founder of the non-profit Atlanta Brass Society (www.atlantabrass.com) and the ABS Press. He is also artistic director of his other love, the Atlanta Symphony Brass Quintet. He serves on the faculties at Georgia and Kennesaw State Universities and at Emory University, where he teaches tuba and euphonium, coaches brass chamber music, and conducts the Emory Brass Ensemble. He has contributed numerous arrangements to the brass quintet and solo electric tuba repertoire.
Along with his numerous musical pursuits (including playing banjo with the ASO for Porgy and Bess), Mr. Moore is active in the welfare of his fellow musicians, serving as treasurer of the International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians, treasurer of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Players? Association, and a board member of the Atlanta Federation of Musicians.
Mr. Moore received a bachelor?s degree in music literature with a minor in composition from Georgia State University. His tuba studies have been with Arnold Jacobs and Ed Kleinhammer of the Chicago Symphony, Ward Fearn of the Philadelphia Orchestra, William Hill of GSU, and his father, longtime ASO tubist under Henry Sopkin, E.W. Moore. He and his wife, Paula Peace, artistic director and pianist of the Atlanta Chamber Players, have a trumpet-playing daughter, Erin Vanessa.
