Beginning as a self taught guitarist at age 8, Massachusetts native Michael Gandolfi first got involved in music through rock and jazz improvisation, but he became increasingly interested in composition and began formal music studies while in his early teens. He earned degrees in music from the New England Conservatory of Music and received study fellowships from the Yale Summer School of Music and Art, Composers Conference, and Tanglewood Music Center. Mr. Gandolfi’s honors include grants from the From, Koussevitzky, and Guggenheim Foundations, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. His music has been performed by numerous orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, and Nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam. His Plain Song, Fantastic Dances, was premiered last October by the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, and the Weilerstein Trio premiered his piano trio Trivia in January in Boston. He has written three works for young audiences, The Piper’s Tale, Pinocchio’s Adventures in Funland, and Gwendolyn Gets Her Wish. Other recent compositions include Vientos y Tangos for wind ensemble, and incidental music for the Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. He has commissions for a future piano concerto, a saxophone concerto, and works for the Weilerstein Trio and pianist Duncan Cumming. Mr. Gandolfi’s music has been recorded on the Deutsche Grammophon, CRI, and Innova labels. He is a faculty member of the New England Conservatory of Music and the Tanglewood Music Center. He was a visiting lecturer on music at Harvard University in 2002, and he held a similar position there from 1996 to 1999.
