Born in Aylshire, Scotland, Mr. MacMillan studied composition at Edinburgh and Durham Universities. He has served as Visiting Composer and artistic director of the Philharmonia Orchestra’s contemporary Music Today series in London, which was launched with a performance of his Búsqueda. He also has an international career as an orchestral conductor, having this season led concerts at the Proms and with the Detroit Symphony, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and Choir, and New Zealand Symphony, among others. Currently serving as Composer/Conductor for the BBC Philharmonic, he was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2004. His music continues to be shaped by his social conscience and devout Roman Catholicism, as well as his love for the traditions and music of his native Scotland. His compositions appear on more than 20 current recordings. Upcoming premieres include SunDogs, a 20minute choral work for this summer’s Three Choirs Festival in Britain, a piano concerto for Stephen Hough, to be introduced at a Minnesota Orchestra concert next April, and The Sacrifice, a new opera to be premiered by the Welsh National Opera in September 2007.
