America went wild for Dvořák when he arrived in New York in 1892. Throngs mobbed the dock when his ship arrived; reporters transcribed his every word. He was not loathe to talk to them in his broken English. Three weeks after his arrival, Dvořák gave his first concert in this country, a gala Carnegie Hall event commemorating the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the New World by Columbus. He conducted his just completed choral work, the Te Deum, preceded by a group of three pieces entitled Nature, Life, and Love. This cycle of concert overtures had already received its premiere back home, at the composer’s farewell concert in Prague.
