Powered by five world premieres – the most ever in its history — conducted by Music Director Robert Spano, and a treasure trove of dazzling stars and beloved masterpieces, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s 65th-anniversary season is one celebration after another, from the incomparable cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the eloquently expressive violin of Midori and the poetic artistry of pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet and piano phenomenon Lang Lang to orchestral jewels by Bach and Beethoven led by Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles.
The 2009-10 season also features the world debut of the jazz-inspired American Symphony by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-musician Wynton Marsalis, his first-ever purely orchestral work; Croatian-born pianist-composer Dejan Lazic’s reinvention of the Brahms’s Concerto for Violin; and world-premiere works by Atlanta native Jennifer Higdon and Michael Gandolfi, members of Mr. Spano’s Atlanta School of Composers, to name just a few of the treats awaiting concertgoers.
Marvin Hamlisch on Broadway highlights the new SuperPOPS season, and a New year’s Eve performance by singer extraordinaire Sylvia McNair tops off an especially bright holiday schedule.
