Student Programming

Music is essential to the education of young minds.

Through its student programming initiatives, the ASO seeks to give more young people more opportunities to learn about music, play instruments and collaborate with professional musicians.

SOUND LEARNING

A partnership between the ASO, Georgia State University and Atlanta and Fulton County Schools, Sound Learning celebrates its 10th year in the 2008-2009 season. This innovative program continues to provide students at partner elementary schools in-depth and hands-on musical instruction.

This program enhances core curriculum study and expands learning opportunities through the infusion of music into all subject areas. Sound Learning allows students, teachers and musicians to explore the connection between music and the general curriculum, utilizing ASO artist residencies and music curriculum materials developed by the ASO's Education Department.

The Sound Learning program includes:

  1. Interactive musical engagement and development among children, teachers, and musicians

  2. Attendance at Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Young People’s Concerts

  3. Embedded professional development and ongoing planning among teachers, musicians, and site coordinators

  4. Systematic assessment/evaluation

This program is the recipient of an A+ Partnership Award from the Atlanta Public Schools and was included in a Harvard University Project Zero study titled The Quality of Qualities: Excellence in Arts Education and How to Achieve It.

2008-2009 Sound Learning partner elementary schools are:

Centennial Place Elementary (Atlanta Public Schools)

Drew Charter School (Atlanta Public Schools)
