February 2, 1945 – First Concert by the Atlanta Youth Symphony
(Sponsored by the Atlanta Music Club)

From the opening downbeat of the first concert in 1945, to the final chord of the Mahler 2nd in 1966, Sopkin took a youth orchestra and built it to the level of a very significant regional US orchestra.

April 6, 1966 was Henry Sopkin’s last concert where he led the ASO in a performance of Mahler’s: Symphony No. 2.

In 1966, when the Milwaukee Braves baseball team moved to Atlanta, Sopkin said,

“…if Atlanta is going to we are going to have a big league baseball team, the City of Atlanta needs a big league Orchestra.”
