Biography

Pianist Marc-André Hamelin is known for his unique blend of musicianship and expressive virtuosity. 

A few highlights of the 2015/16 season for Mr. Hamelin include the London Philharmonic and Vladimir Jurowski for performances and recording; tours North America with the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Iván Fischer; has a three part residency at the Muziekgewbouw in Amsterdam, and debuts at the Teatro alla Scala with the La Scala Orchestra led by Jakob Hrusa.

Among his recitals this season in North American will include presentations by Carnegie Hall in Stern Auditorium, Chicago Symphony Presents, the Van Cliburn, and the Green Center in Sonoma.  In Europe he will be heard in Munich, Antwerp, Moscow, Perugia, Heidelberg, Bilbao, and the Salzburg Mozarteum among others. 

Mr. Hamelin records exclusively for Hyperion Records with a discography of over 50 recordings.  He recently received his tenth Grammy nomination for the Shostakovich Piano Quintet with the Takacs Quartet. His compositions are published by Edition Peters. 

Born in Montreal and a resident of Boston, Hamelin is the recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the German Record Critic’s Association. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a Chevalier de l’Ordre du Québec, and a member of the Royal Society of Canada.
