Yvonne Powers Peterson


Associate Principal Oboe Yvonne Powers Peterson joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) in 1992.

Previously Principal Oboe of the Grand Rapids Symphony, Orquesta Sinfonica de Veracruz in Mexico, and the Cabrillo Music Festival, becoming a member the Atlanta Symphony fulfilled her lifelong dream of performing in a major symphony orchestra.

Ms. Peterson was born in Chicago where she studied with Robert Mayer of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Adrian Gnam and Jonanthan Dlouhy at Ohio University; and at the Cleveland Institute of Music with noted teacher John Mack, who was then Principal Oboist of the Cleveland Orchestra.  She was a regular participant in major summer music festivals such a the Spoleto Festival in Italy, the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, and the National Repertory Orchestra (formerly the Colorado Philharmonic)

Ms. Peterson has served on the faculty of the University of Evansbille, Calvin College, Georgia State University, Emory University, and the Cleveland Music School Settlement.  She served many years as woodwind coach for the Atlanta Symphony and Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Orchestras, and maintained a private oboe studio for over 20 years.  She retired from teaching to raise a stepson and a daughter, and resides in Ansley Park.
